True story: I can do 60% of my full-time job in a Microsoft Office 365 product, 30% in WebEx, and the rest through a web browser — a radical departure from where I was earlier in life.
That’s why, whenever I travel, I want to keep my 15” MacBook Pro charged and ready for bigger tasks that may never come (you know, when you need to open Photoshop, or go deep in Excel, PowerPoint, or browse around in SharePoint).
I’ve shifted almost all of my travel computing to my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9” with Smart Keyboard and I couldn’t be happier. Add in a USB-C Power Delivery (PD) power bank and 30W USB-C PD charger and you’ve got an ultra-portable device that can recharge rapidly and still fit on a tray table.
Changing the way I work
The best part about having an iPad Pro around is that I can focus on work when I need to, and can focus on entertainment when I want to.
Admittedly, I haven’t always been a fan of Microsoft. My opinion completely changed when our organization moved to Office 365. Suddenly, I had the ability to get the vast majority of my work completed on a device that weighed dramatically less than a laptop, had a way better battery, and could play NBA2K 19 Games or watch movies whenever I wanted to take a break.
Here’s another fun fact: I’m trying to build, design, and write 100% of this site on my iPad. I set up AWS Lightsail hosting, as well as downloaded, unzipped, installed, and customized the WordPress theme, all in Safari. The iPad is more than just a content consumption device, and I can prove it!
I want to quickly move to an all USB-C future, but the rest of my tech gear isn’t quite there yet. My beloved AirPods charge with a Lightning cable and my iPhone can charge wirelessly with either a Qi-compatible mat or with a Lightning cable. Only my MacBook Pro and iPad Pro charge with a USB-C cable. So, this makes my cable bag a little bulkier then I’d want it to be. I’m hoping the rumors are true and we see USB-C iPhones sooner than later.
Finally, there’s the price. This is the big one. The configuration I have – with sales tax – is a staggering $1,624.89!
- 12.9-inch iPad Pro Wi‑Fi 256GB – Space Gray: $1,149.00
- Smart Keyboard Folio for 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd Generation) – US English: $199
- Apple Pencil (2nd Generation): $129
This would, and probably should, price a lot of consumers out for what’s effectively a second laptop.
